PSA Script

Each year, approximately 1.2 million students fail to graduate from high school, more than half of whom are from low-income and minority groups.  From October of 2000 to October of 2001, high school students living in low-income families dropped out of school at six times the rate of their peers from high-income families. Most dropouts are already on the path to failure in the middle grades and engage in behaviors that strongly correlate to dropping out in high school. Unfortunately, many students are not given the extra support they need to successfully make the transition to high school. With additional guidance on the importance of high school graduation and college entrance, and one on one tutoring we can send more students to college.

Capstone Project

My Capstone Project deals with educating low-income students on the importance of graduating high school. Students from low-income families are dropping out in larger numbers than ever before. The ones that do graduate high school don't go on to college because they believe a high school diploma is enough for a lifelong career. I plan on creating mentor program that will work hand in hand with students at a younger age, around elementary school age, to motivate and make them understand the importance of a high school diploma and college education.
